Montverde
We believe the first people to come to Montverde were the Tequesta, Timucuan
and Calusa Indians. Later than 1696, they merged with the other tribes to become
the Seminoles.
Records show that Lake County Homesteading began around 1854. Montverde was
platted by Alex St. Clair Abrams. More families followed the sandy trails
through the woods. Some came by horseback, some by wagons pulled by oxen, and
some walked. They built there homes among the live oak trees where years before
the Indians had lived. The woods were so thick you could not see from one house
to the other.
The story handed down about the naming of Montverde was that a person from
Vermont came across Lake Apopka, located at the green hills, and called it by
its Spanish name. "Monte" means "mountain," and "verde" means "green."
Montverde was incorporated May 18, 1925, with a mayor and five councilmen.
